How did you first get into running?
I first started running when I was 10. I won my school cross country race, got signposted to Rotherham Harriers, and running has been a big part of my life ever since.
Has your motivation for running changed over time?
Absolutely! I trained and competed intensely between the ages of 10-17. Life then took me down a different path, but running has always been there in the background.
Since becoming a parent, I have found myself feeling more motivated to train and keep myself as fit as I can be. My little boy is definitely my biggest inspiration…before every training session or race he gives me the best advice.
I really hope that he loves running and athletics as much as I do!
What do you enjoy most about being part of this coaching group?
There is such a strong sense of community and it is so nice to belong to a group that really champions each other. It is really inspiring to hear of people’s stories of how they got into the sport, and to see their running journeys unfold.
How has being a Green Peaks Athlete benefited your training?
I have only been a Green Peaks athlete for a short amount of time, however, I am really feeling the benefit of structured training already. I like to have a plan, and I like the accountability, so this programme is really suiting me.
The most important thing for me at this point in my life is having a coach who is understanding and flexible with their approach. I have a 5 year old and a husband who works away a lot, and life can be unpredictable at times, so I am very grateful for having such an understanding coach who is always there for advice to make adjustments where necessary.
Favourite race or running event you’ve done so far?
As a new recruit to the Steel City Striders Running club as well, I have to say that the Rother Valley relays has been my favourite team event so far. The atmosphere was so good, and it felt so special to be part of a winning team with athletes that I really admire.
My favourite solo run was the Retford Half back in March. I had no real indication of where I was at with my fitness levels, but I completed the race with a 4 minute PB. I was absolutely buzzing to have achieved that in my first race as a Steel City Strider.
Recent achievement you’re proud of
For me, coming back to club running feels like such a big achievement. It’s something that I have been wanting to do for years, but life just kept getting in the way. So to finally have some space to be able to dedicate to consistent training and the odd competition feels so special to me. I am proud of myself for pushing myself to do that…I was so nervous before my first Striders session at the track!
What’s your go-to running playlist or podcast?
Up until recently I have enjoyed running with music. Mainly my own curated playlist full of up beat tunes (mainly Chemical Brothers and Bicep).
However, more recently I have preferred training without music, I feel it is helping me to focus more and regulate my breathing better.
What’s your dream race or bucket-list running goal?
After joining Striders not long after turning 40, I made a goal for myself to try and work towards getting back to my 30 year old fitness levels with a 5k PB of 17.39.
If I match or even beat this, I know my young 30 year old self would be incredibly proud of 40 year old Leanne!
Favourite post-run treat or recovery ritual?
Coffee. Always. I love my coffee.
I’m also a big chocolate fan. After a tough training session I do enjoy a very cold chocolate milkshake. Protein right?!
One piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out
Your running journey is your own. You don’t need to compare yourself with others. Don’t get too overwhelmed by the competition. It’s good to feel disappointed with bad races, but don’t let it consume you. Running can be what you want it to be, whenever you need it.
Enjoy the ride and be proud of showing up every single time.
