Hannah Holliday

Name & Where You’re From
Hannah Holliday
Originally the Midlands but Sheffield has been my home for the last 25 years.

How did you first get into running?
I first started running during my year abroad at university. I was living in China, was extremely unfit and had put on loads of weight, but there was a running track so I decided to ‘take up running’. It was humbling and I struggled to even jog 400m but then immediately declared I wanted to train for a marathon. Everyone laughed at me and said I wouldn’t be able to do it…so I did!

Has your motivation for running changed over time?
After I had kids my motivation to run became purely about headspace and a bit of time to myself, coupled with trying to build up some fitness again. Then I decided I wanted to start challenging myself so for the last few years I’ve usually had some sort of goal on the horizon. I also love the social side of it and that keeps me motivated in between challenges.

What do you enjoy most about being part of this coaching group?
I love that everyone in the group is working towards different things, but there’s genuine support and encouragement for everything and everyone. It’s great to see other people putting the work in and smashing their goals - I find it very motivating.

How has being a Green Peaks Athlete benefited your training?
As a coach myself, I know how important it is to have a well structured training plan. I was previously planning all my own training but never quite dared to push myself as much as I knew I needed to be pushed. Joining Green Peaks has made a huge difference to my running - both in race times and also just general confidence in my own ability. It’s also really nice to have someone else doing the thinking for me!

Favourite race or running event you’ve done so far?
I’ve been lucky to take part in some very special races and it’s hard to narrow them down! For atmosphere and experience, the Boston Marathon was incredible and a proper bucket list moment. But in terms of achievement, completing my first 50 mile race (Ladybower50) after various setbacks and a previous DNF really showed me that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Recent achievement you’re proud of
I recently did the Brass Monkey half marathon in York and absolutely shocked myself by running sub-90 for the first time. I’ve never felt so proud of myself!

What’s your go-to running playlist or podcast?
I love house music and my other hobby (when I’m not running!) is learning how to DJ. So I always listen to some sort of DJ mix for inspiration and ideas. It’s amazing how fast the miles pass when you’re focusing on something completely different.

What’s your dream race or bucket-list running goal?
I’d love to do all the World Marathon Majors. I’ve ticked off London and Boston so still have 4 to do (or 5 if you count Sydney!)

Favourite post-run treat or recovery ritual?
A coffee, a protein shake and a hot shower.

One piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out
Running is really hard at first, but don’t give up! Stick with it, go at your own pace and focus on being consistent rather than being fast. It will all click sooner than you think!
