Ed Shattock

Name & Where You’re From
Ed Shattock, Warrington/Sheffield for the last 16 years

How did you first get into running?
I ran some cross country at school but then became a swimmer. A housemate at university signed up for a running event called “Rat race” and convinced me to go on some training runs with him and I caught the bug. Parkrun might have had a bit to do with it as well!

Has your motivation for running changed over time?
I used to run for fun and general fitness but since joining the Steel City Striders 2 years ago I've started setting a few goals and competing in a lot more events.

What do you enjoy most about being part of this coaching group?
The community is great and everyone taking part is friendly and supportive. I used to go running when and where I felt like it whereas the coaching has given me much more of a framework, including speed sessions which I was previously lacking. The long steady runs still allow me to go out and explore the trails though!

How has being a Green Peaks Athlete benefited your training?
As above, it has given me much more structure but I've also seen my pbs steadily improving too.

Favourite race or running event you’ve done so far?
The round Sheffield run always stands out to me as a fun and interesting race both summer and winter. I had a fantastic time running the latest winter edition with my fiancée Ellen, and it helped we managed to sneak a prize as well! RunGreno comes a close second, I really enjoy a trail race.

Recent achievement you’re proud of
I completed my first full distance triathlon last summer at Nottingham Outlaw which took a lot of hardwork!

What’s your go-to running playlist or podcast?
I prefer to run to the sound of nature!

What’s your dream race or bucket-list running goal?
This year I’m targeting a sub-17min 5k which has been a goal for a long time, and then trying for a sub 3hr marathon in the autumn. My choice for bucket list would be the Archipelago SwimRun in the Isles of Scilly where you run across an island, then swim to the next where you start running again, and so on until you get back to the start!

Favourite post-run treat or recovery ritual?
Black coffee and a large piece of cake

One piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out
I would encourage people to sign up to their local running club as soon as they can. There's usually a wide range of abilities, loads of different people to meet and encourage to enter lots of races.
