Bethan Varney

Name & Where You’re From
Bethan Varney. Originally Scunthorpe and then made my way to Sheffield!

How did you first get into running?

We're an athletics family, my dad was a hammer thrower so it was only a matter of time before I found myself on the track. I'm far too small to be a thrower so running it was! Growing up I competed middle distance on the track (and have been known to jump over a few hurdles too) before finding road running when I went to university.

Has your motivation for running changed over time?

For me it's always been about the challenge. I just love chasing goals! It also helps that I can't sit still and love being outside so motivation most of the time comes fairly easily.

What do you enjoy most about being part of this coaching group?
It's such a lovely, supportive community. Everyone is chasing their own goals but still there to support and cheer everyone else on.

How has being a Green Peaks Athlete benefited your training?
I love structure. Once I'm in a training plan I'm locked in. Green Peaks has provided a solid, challenging but achievable structure that is really helping me to make huge progress with my times!

Favourite race or running event you’ve done so far?
Great North Run. It was my first half marathon and my first proper introduction to road racing. The atmosphere is amazing, definitely one to tick off!

Recent achievement you’re proud of
FINALLY breaking the 20 min barrier for the 5k! It was a real test of determination, took 16 weeks of training and 3 attempts but the day it finally happened was such a huge achievement, one I'll be proud of for a very long time.

What’s your go-to running playlist or podcast?
My running playlist is a work of art, it features a very eclectic mix of any and every song I've ever listened to and thought that's a good one to sing along to! I have been known to sing my way through many a long run.

What’s your dream race or bucket-list running goal?
I'd love one day to run the Boston Marathon, it just looks absolutely brilliant. But for now building on the success of the shorter distance PBs from the last year.

Favourite post-run treat or recovery ritual?
Anything sweet, I just can't help myself.

One piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out
Chase your own goals, don't worry about what anyone else is doing. Also invest in a good pair of trainers, it's definitely worth it!
